Blay Example
1877 ($8,000/27,500) is the key to the series and one of the most popular US coins in general, with a strong demand in all grades. It has the second lowest mintage of the series (825,500), second only to the 1909-S but in reality is much rarer. Because of this it's commonly counterfeited, something buyers of raw examples should keep in mind. Certification is highly recommended since many cast counterfeits exist with correct diagnostic traits. True 65RDs seldom appear and certification doesn't always help here -- cherrypicking at this price level is a must.
