1886 Type I ($1,150/3,500) and 1889 ($600/3,500) are nearly as tough as 1888 in higher grades. They are followed by 1885 ($750/2,250) and 1884 ($600/2,250), both slightly easier to find but significantly red gems are ellusive. 1885 has the lowest mintage of the 80s. Most collectors bought proofs and ignored business strikes in this era and the survival of mint state coins is a matter of chance. Spotting is a major problem for which certification is no help, especially with the later 80s date coins.
