This decade of Indians has its own unique characteristics. The 80s dates can be found in lustrous condition but will not, for the most part, be as bright in tone as earlier or later dates. Deep shades of red abound in MS65+, as do light beige toned examples. Bright golds are rare. And the modified obverse of 1886, in slightly less relief, makes examples with fully defined feathers actually tougher to find in the increasingly higher mintage years to follow.
The later part of the decade can be found brighter than the early 80s but spotting becomes a major problem, which continues to plague the series into the early 1890s.
