Origin
The birth of the Indian Head cent was due mainly to problems of its short lived predecessor, the Flying Eagle cent. Designed by Chief Engraver James B. Longacre, it was difficult to strike -- the head and tail feathers of the eagle in particular, since the heavy reverse wreath was opposite in the dies from these features.
